MIDCENTURY REFRESH

Nestled deep in a secluded neighborhood of Montgomery County, Maryland, this classic Midcentury Modern home — originally designed by Eason Cross, FAIA in 1968 — needed a delicate touch to expand its footprint while maintaining and respecting its original character.

With deference to its striking architectural features, a decision was made at the outset of the project that any intervention would stand in stark contrast to the existing structure. In lieu of clean lines and orthogonal planes, a curving addition rendered in dark stucco was carved into the existing landscape, creating a private patio and rear entry for a new 350 square foot flexible living space.

While the original home featured ample windows typical of similar Midcentury designs, interior walls and outdated finishes made for dark, disjointed spaces. A re-configured main floor finished in brighter, more contemporary materials now allows light to filter throughout the living areas, creating a more inviting entry sequence and semi-open floor plan.
