CARLSON FARM

Originally constructed as a homestead for a prominent Germantown, Maryland farm family in 1867, the house now known as Carlson Farm has seen multiple renovations and additions in its nearly 160-year history. A simple rectangle morphed into a larger u-shaped building, which first hosted an open patio and later defined an enclosed great room with a semi-vaulted ceiling. The various projects undertaken by generations led to awkward transitional spaces that were not suited for 21st (or even late 20th) century living.

The latest transformation involved no change to the existing footprint. Instead, second story spaces were added above the existing wings, interior spaces were cleaned up and re-configured, and the aforementioned great room ceiling was re-framed to maximize natural light, volume and views towards an environmental easement beyond the property.
